About this deal

There’s very little thinking and planning involved, and any strategy as such is usually only as far ahead as the next turn. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. It’s all the fairness of natural evil, as liable to pave your way with sunshine and roses as it is to flatten you with an earthquake. If you want to make things easier, lie them flat down, but if you like a challenge, stand them on end. If any pieces fall to the table during cleanup, that player loses a safety certificate and passes the hook to the next player.

However, it that piece never makes it to the floor and stays clinging onto the structure, things are okay, and you keep your certificate.

Games are social and interactive experiences and having players sit out and not able to contribute goes against that philosophy for us. Now place one of each of the different coloured girders however you like, as long as each of the supports has at least one girder touching it.

So if you’re in the mood for a build-em-up knock-it-down type of dexterity game, or just looking to play something while the snags are cooking on the BBQ. My group and I were big fans of the variant rules which really help enhance the base rules but also add to the replay value. This adds a bit of a long-term strategic element to the game, and helps you mitigate a bit of that bad luck.

The Foreman variant addresses this by having each player start with two random task cards from the deck, and twice throughout the game you can forego the required task and instead play one of your cards from your hand to complete that task instead. Since nothing but the supports can touch the table any girders with one end touching the table must be pushed back on to the structure. When even your worst mistakes can be stepping stones toward becoming the hottest man, there’s no reason to regret them. But the cleanup is a crucial moment, resetting the tower to baseline compliance, no girders touching the ground, no castoff bricks lingering beneath the skyscraper, no bodies distressing the current workforce. Everybody impales the occasional pedestrian with a dropped beam, sometimes even as early as the first turn.

So, what do you play with your friends to fill the time that supports enough players, is easy to learn but not too simple and only takes about 30 minutes to play? In either case, I usually have lots of fun with them, even if I don’t win which happens more times than not. Having this alternative victory condition is awesome because it creates both positive and negative moments of tension. In Men at Work you are attempting to construct a building by adding different coloured wooden girders to the base structure. It packs a surprising amount of game into a seemingly simple concept, complete with tough decisions, funny moments, and satisfying rewards for being bold. Some of the moves are a bit more difficult to pull off than the others, balancing bricks or beams on the shoulders of the workers while finding the correct place to place them but nothing here screams overly difficult, and it is a stunner to see on the table when you walk by. From simply placing a Meeple on a specific coloured girder to balancing a girder on just one other girder. and the hilarious gasps and squeaks that involuntarily escape the players' lips as the pieces teetered precariously.

The pictures show what a player must add to the site and the instructions tell them how to add these items. The traditional way to win is if a player collects the required number of worker of the month awards. After this, the instruction cards are shuffled, and the Rita Boss card is placed in the upper half of the deck. Other times you’ll be asked to lay a girder across a hot man’s ample shoulders, or balance it atop only one other girder. You might be asked to balance a girder on a strong worker’s shoulder or move a worker onto a girder whilst they are carrying a brick on their shoulder.

Introducing so much variation gives this game a decent amount replay value – something most stacking games can't boast!
