About this deal

The characterisation is excellent even those who are unlikeable are well portrayed and you gasp at some of the dialogue with the racist and sexist comments that Cleo is on the receiving end of especially in her career. Her published titles include: Tell Me Your Secret, The Brighton Mermaid, The Friend, When I Was Invisible, That Girl From Nowhere, The Flavours of Love, The Woman He Loved Before, Goodnight, Beautiful and The Chocolate Run. I use my writing to try to explore what I’m feeling, I try to get into the heads of other people so I can see things from their point of view.

I absolutely love in books when an author takes a fact, such as this and uses it, expands it and builds a very intriguing interesting character such as this. On the surface she appears to have it all until her past catches up with her and she has to dismantle the life she’s built for herself piece by piece before anyone finds out about her other husband. This was so close to being a five-star read for me but the only thing that made me drop half a star was because of how the story ended. When I finally reached the end, I reread it and it occurred to me that it needed a slower start to get to know the characters properly and take it all in.

She is a very different person in the present day and it’s intriguing trying to work out what, how and why her life has imploded.

The dangerous obsession within the relationship of husband and wife and the guilt when the wife found out…. I love tying together the hints I’ve seen in the present day plot with things going on in the past as more and more gets revealed.

Usually, this would be a positive for me as I prefer to be shocked than for a story to go down the obvious route, but I did feel slightly let down when a new twist came into play.

It’s something that happens to them because it’s something that happens to Black people just trying to live their lives every day but it’s not the main plot and this is not a book about racism. Dangerous, compelling, obsessive love mixes with murder, violence and desperation until the story comes to a head with an unexpected reveal.

This is the kind of mystery, though, where you want the main character to contact the police at multiple points, which she does not do, so the plot can plod along. I was absolutely delighted to learn that Dorothy Koomson, one of my top ten, or quite possibly even my top five favourite authors had written a new novel. However, as she drafts her final ever episode her life turns upside down and people she knows start getting hurt and it soon becomes clear that someone is trying to frame her for murder and she thinks she knows why.

Dorothy Koomson is my all time favourite author and I’m yet to read anything I didn’t like from her, this is no exception. The plot was unique and unpredictable, and the twist at the end which I completely did not see coming. It’s been a while since I’ve read a full book in one day but this was literally in my hand for the whole day. This time it took a few pages in before I could say I enjoyed it but my goodness, literally I could not turn the pages quick enough to see what was going to happen. We know that Cleo is choosing to implode her own life, which seems to be going well, and we find out why through chapters dispersed throughout the current timeline that provide us the background that leads to her current situation.
