This is an interesting story set in the near future, where global warming has caused the Earth’s sea levels to rise, flooding much of Britain and the rest of the world.

Set on the east coast of England after the sea has risen and flooded much of East Anglia, Floodland tells the story of ten year old Zoe who has lost her parents in a confusing rescue mission from her home island of Norwich. The writing on the other hand was not the best, I feel like the emotions could have been shown better. Along the way she ends up at another Island where she gets herself into a tricky situation and well I won't spoil any more. The language in the book is simple to read but very descriptive, using lots of metaphors and personification.Alone and desperate among marauding gangs, she manages to dig a derelict boat out of the mud and gets away to Eels Island. Put this together with the feral survival of the children on the Island of Eels and you have Floodland. You can see that a lot of the ideas in it were thought up a moment before writing them rather than being planned in advance; they haven't been adequately integrated. Ten-year-old Zoe and her parents struggle to survive in Norwich, now an island, until the last supply ship is set to take them away.

He has judged numerous books awards, including the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and the Costa Book Awards. This book was the winner of the Branford Boase Award 2001 and marked the start of author Marcus Sedgwick's multi-award-winning career. Although, the purpose of this was to read the book and create activities around it, I found that I was drawn into the book and constantly wanting to know what was going to happen next.No, that’s not a typo – Norwich has become an island as the ice caps melted and sea levels rose inundating much of Britain and the rest of the world.
