FollowMe Tandem - Parent-Child Bicycle Coupling
About this deal
The FollowMe Tandem allows you to adapt to different situations to ensure a great family cycling experience. This is where my biggest criticism of the FollowMe lies: the frame rattles a lot when folded away, and requires periodic tweaking to minimise noise and to avoid clashes with the bike. I balance this by putting my panniers on my Old Man Mountain Sherpa front rack, which accommodates my disc brakes. They may think they are helping by applying the brakes at a junction, but not being able to pull away as you’d intended could cause problems!
The FollowMe Tandem Coupling is an ideal fit for my needs: I want to carry two children on a standard bicycle, safely, in a way that involves them in the ride. A quick test proved that it’s almost impossible to start from a stationery position when the child’s brakes are applied (though he was riding an Islabike, which has serious braking capabilities). We've had a problem with fitting the pin on one side of the adult bike's rear axle - the holes don't line up properly presumably due to manufacturing tolerances.
If you’re going to the trouble of towing your child on their own bike (vs a “half” tag along bike), it better be easy to allow them to ride solo, or hook them up for that “just in case” scenario. The bike felt extremely stable with the Islabike hooked up, with no noticeable rattles as I bumped along pothole ridden roads. This can range from slightly annoying to quite stressful if you’re trying to navigate on a busy street or when passing other cyclists on a single path.So after plucking out the rather weighty manual, the first thing you notice is that it has been written with the European market in mind, with translations in German, English, French and Dutch. Auch die Tatsache, dass kein brauchbares Montagezubehör beiliegt und ebenfalls nicht hochwertige Zubehörteile extra für teuer Geld angeschafft werden müssen, ist frech.
For all bikes, the FollowMe must be adjusted to that the child’s front wheel is lifted off the ground with 6-8 cm of ground clearance. To wrap this review up, I would like to jump on answering some questions that I get quite often from other parents or that I had before I purchased our FollowMe and couldn’t find any answers to before figuring it out all by myself. If you will be doing a significant amount of child towing, we highly recommend investing the extra money and getting a FollowMe. Please note that adaptors for adults' bikes with solid spindles (wheel nuts) are not included as standard. The FollowMe eliminates that risk by being installed to both the parent’s bike rear axle and the kid’s bike front axle, not allowing them to tilt or bent in any way.On the parent bike using quick release or appropriate axle adapters, on the children's bike with a clamp on the down tube. And the info on the rust issues was great too, I will see if the manufacture will send me one without stickers so I can powder coat mine before I put it on my bike to avoid that issue. This has no effect on safety, nor does it cause any looseness in the connection, but it took me a little while to get used to it.
