About this deal

Looking back, the clues were all there, and ‘hiding in plain sight’ couldn’t be a more appropriate description of the killer, or killers. The highlights of these books are always when Rebus is centre stage and this time it’s particularly his brilliantly choreographed back and forth with Cafferty.

The Reverend Richard Coles gives us a serpent in England's pastoral Eden - and whodunit fans can give praise and rejoice. Alongside the book, there was also a jigsaw– and that was a particular delight for me as someone who has always done jigsaws during Christmas breaks and summer holidays. This is the 24th Rebus novel by Ian Rankin and, like previous books in the series, it is well-written, well-plotted and smart with plenty of twists and turns. Talk about lifestyles of the rich and shameless – really the true target of this whole case could have been anyone.Tynecastle had long been on the watch list of “Complaints” and with the officer threatening to spill the beans, Gartcosh is taking a keen interest.

Like all pandemics, there are those that succumb, those that struggle through, and those that seek to profit, in this case by “Furlough Fraud”. No shortage of slippery characters here: a well-connected land developer, a lettings agency once owned by “Big Ger” and tenuous links from there to a man “Big Ger” reputedly had eliminated. The National Library of Scotland also hosted a small exhibition highlighting some of my writing archive. An unsparing yet sympathetic depiction of Edinburgh’s ignored underclass, with terrific characterisation. Fairly complex plot expertly woven with a large number of characters and the usual humour throughout. But it’s an odd length, 50 or 60 pages, quite a skinny book, unless it was part of a longer book of short stories. Detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke tackles Edinburgh's most explosive case in years, as a corrupt cop harbouring huge secrets goes missing.
