The tile art is simple but beautiful (it’s by Klemens Franz), and the tile symbols are clear, even across the table, making it easy (at least visually) to evaluate the tiles that others have. The Agricola-sized box already includes the family-friendly Druids expansion as well as the Tunnel Tiles mini-expansion and offers hours and hours of gameplay. Published in 2015, my playing group and I have already encountered and played a long list of new games. If there’s a downside to Isle of Skye, it’s that it is best when played swiftly, and for whatever reason, the decisions in the game lock some players up.
What makes Carcassonne special is its common landscape; what makes Isle of Skye special is each player’s private territory. I love that the Big Box is not that big, and I certainly would not want to pay more for stuff I know I’ll never use. Feeling inadequate with only the core game, two expansions arrived at some point afterwards to bring us something new along the basis game. You can take advantage of a marketplace of positional goods where the demand is set, at least in part, by you yourself. It adopts a system of randomised scoring, which will hugely influence the development of your islands.
It’s theming at its most careless and lazy – there is nothing in the game that is actually about Scotland. Of course, this means that the value of each tile you pull is different each game and with the changing game state.
In addition to these, each symbol on the tiles has two corresponding scroll tiles in the bag, which score an individual player points based on how many of each symbol are in his or her territory at the end of the game.
Then the screens are removed and each player may purchase a tile from another player, at the cost that other player has assigned. They mention that it is not too complex, it is easy for any player to pick up, and it isn't difficult to teach. Maybe you’re trying to make your opponents think you desperately want a tile you have no use for – will they pay over the odds to deprive you of some perceived advantage? A short trading round then occurs – any money you did not bid is available to you to bid on the other tiles you see. The first evolution in the design is that you’re not fighting over a shared landscape – each player is working on their own patch of a Scottish island.
But the best evolution is in how Isle of Skye creates the context for meaningful strategy and tactics. It’s simply not a big deal in those games for a player to try the tile in several locations before choosing.I have to admit, during that long period of absence, I started to miss this Alexander Pfister’s and Andreas Pelikan’s creation. Players score victory points by fulfilling objectives on scoring tiles, from coins, and from fulfilling objectives on scrolls. Playing well you can ensure you don’t overpay for what you keep and you can get the most for the tiles you do lose.
