About this deal

Each song is extremely personal and at the same time, universal; covering subjects topical, humorous, and soulful; from the satirical to the sublime. In this release, his third album for Reference Recordings, Doug MacLeod continues to explore the breadth and depth of the human condition. Honestly, it could be my speakers but this copy sounds a little blurry compared to the streaming versions of this album that I’m used to.

All-in-all this edition of Kind of Blue meets the highest audiophile standards and offers the truest sound for the most enjoyment. DUE SOON From the wreckage of Free came Bad Company, the English hard rock supergroup fronted by singer Paul Rodgers and featuring his drummer bandmate Simon Kirke, Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell. Or by affirming that, every year, it sells tens of thousands of copies more than five decades after its original release. Kind of Blue isn't merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it's an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album. I appreciate that there are other jazz musicians who are greater masters of their instrument but they lack the emotion that Miles Davis offers. This is a follow-up to a post I made all the way back in July about the best available HiFi copy of Bill Evans's Portrait in Jazz.

The expressive warmth, imaging clarity, frequency extension, and window-on-the-world breadth afforded by this new edition places music lovers right in the studio with the sextet. The pinnacle of high-quality vinyl — the Ultra High Quality Record (UHQR®) from Analogue Productions! These sessions are so legendary, if I do anything in my life with as much vigor as these guys pumped out for this recording, I’ll die a happy man. We’ve taken this classic and given it the full Analogue Productions reissue treatment, featuring a remaster by Germany’s Willem Makkee from the original analog tapes, and plating and 180-gram pressing by Quality Record Pressings. TLDR: Yes, the more you spend the better it sounds but fuck it do whatever sounds good to you and isn't lost on your system. That may not mean it's the greatest jazz album ever made, but it certainly is a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. If I'm going to spend a sizeable amount on a 1959 pressing, I might as well get an earlier one, in the original Columbia plastic inner sleeve.

I bought this for my daughter, who knows little about jazz, but I thought it would be a good introduction for her. The back cover lists "Flamenco Sketches" as the fourth track and "All Blues" as the last track, which is incorrect. One day, however, they might and some albums now come very close to doing so, like Kamasi Washington’s recent album: The Epic. The final track on CD Two is a mesmerizing 17-minute live concert version of “So What” (without Adderley, with Kelly), recorded in Holland, April 1960. Davis led a sextet which included pianist Bill Evans, and saxophonists John Coltrane and ‘Cannonball’ Adderley.
