About this deal

Even during his lifetime, there were tales of him walking on water or killing mythological creatures. Musashi, however, chose to become a rônin, a lordless sword-for-hire paid in koku, or portions of rice. Nobunaga was so impressed by Yasuke's strength and size—recorded as roughly 188 centimeters (6ft 2in) tall—that he made him his personal retainer and bodyguard.

In the modern age, a best-selling novel, manga comic books, a television series, and more than 30 films have been made about his adventures. Musashi slept out in the open, hunted for food, and earned money by providing services to townsfolk, a lifestyle that toughened both body and mind. To survive for long, however, professionals like Musashi normally avoided warriors of their own or a superior skill level. One very interesting aspect of the book is that Sato's translations retain much of their original Japanese voice, and are not over-prettified by modern literary conventions. During the 13th century, the samurai proved themselves as adept warriors against the invading Mongols.

Adams undertook various expeditions around Southeast Asia between 1614 and 1619, finally dying at Hirado in 1620, where he is buried. Oda Nobunaga made innovations in the fields of organization and war tactics, made heavy use of arquebuses, developed commerce and industry, and treasured innovation. In the early Heian period, during the late 8th and early 9th centuries, Emperor Kanmu sought to consolidate and expand his rule in northern Honshū and made military campaigns against the Emishi, who resisted the governance of the Kyoto-based imperial court. His book Gorin no sho, variously translated as The Book of Five Rings, the Book of Five Elements or Essays on the Five Circles, is considered a classic. He wiped out the opposing warrior monks of Mount Hiei in 1571, besieged the Ikko-ikki peasants and warrior monks at Nagashima and Ishiyama Hongan-ji (ultimately taking Nagashima in 1574 and Ishiyama in 1580), and when shogun Yoshiaki raised his own forces against his former ally, Nobunaga defeated them and sent Yoshiaki into exile, thus ending the Ashikaga Shogunate in 1573. In fact, the legendary Empress Jingu is said to have led an invasion of Korea in the year 200 after her emperor-husband was slain in battle, though whether this invasion ever actually happened remains a matter of debate. The Japanese matchlock was named tanegashima after the Tanegashima island, which is believed to be the place where it was first introduced to Japan. High-ranking samurai equipped with yumi (bows) and who fought on horseback wore ō-yoroi, while lower-ranking samurai equipped with naginata and who fought on foot wore dō-maru.
