About this deal

These Nine Walkers, the Fellowship of the Ring, were chosen to represent the free races of Middle-earth and as a balance to the Nine Riders. Frodo, Sam and Pippin set out through the South Farthing of the Shire towards Buckland, and encounter a black rider. The Fellowship of the Ring was originally released on 29 July 1954 in the United Kingdom (3000 copies; plus 1500 for the American edition). There they are attacked at night by five Black Riders, Frodo puts on the Ring to escape them, and is stabbed in the left shoulder by the Witch-King, the captain of the Black Riders.

Tolkien, edited by Humphrey Carpenter, touch on this matter, notably Letters 123, 124 (in which Tolkien explicitly desires to have the works published together), 125, 126, 131, and 133. The volume consists of a foreword, in which the author discusses his writing of The Lord of the Rings, a prologue titled "Concerning Hobbits, and other matters", and the main narrative in Book I and Book II. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose. His popularity for his Gollum performance in the Jackson trilogy doesn’t mean he is well-suited to reading the book - and this audiobook utterly proves that.III · The Ring goes South — The nine members of the fellowship travel south through Hollin; they try to take the road over the mountain Caradhras but are forced to turn back. When they reach the house at Crickhollow, Merry and Pippin reveal they know about the Ring and insist on travelling with Frodo and Sam. The innkeeper delivers a letter from Gandalf recommending a weather-beaten Ranger known as Strider as their guide to the elves.

Book II chronicles Frodo's stay at Rivendell, where a plan is hatched at the Council of Elrond to destroy the Ring in Mordor. In Rivendell, the Fellowship of the Ring assembles: nine walkers of different races, banded together on a quest to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mordor, thus saving the world from an ancient, cosmic evil.

Knowing the Black Riders will attempt to seize the Ring, Strider guides the group toward the Elvish sanctuary of Rivendell.
