About this deal

Even though Sarah Kay has established quite the fan base on Goodreads and on the web, I just could not connect with these poems on a deeper level - perhaps because poetry has never been my genre of choice. On the whole they have been good with a few outstanding poems but I haven't been left feeling a sense of loss at the end or a sense of longing to read more, much more. I highly think the connection between us is palpable, her words connect to me with too much precision.

I'm not sure if I'll pick up more from this author if this is her usual style, and don't reccommend this if you want to read something more lyrical, as I did. In No Matter the Wreckage, Sarah manages to give us more of a glimpse into her thoughts and experiences, and each and every one, some sounding like simple and mundane actions which are given a breath of life you would never expect, and others such as Subway, a piece which brings you to the underground of New York and illustrates a perfectly a simple picture of what it feels like to take the subway while it is raining. For a future book there may be value in considering whether playing with grammar, spacing, font and sizing changes etc.

No Matter the Wreckage presents readers with new and beloved poetry that showcases Kay’s talent for celebrating family, love, travel, and unlikely romance between inanimate objects (“The Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire”). I like how not all of her pieces stem from anger, or lust, or anguish; the emotional variety of this collection strengthens it. I don't own many poetry books, but in my mind, this is poetry that both an expert on poetry and a casual reader can enjoy. One aspect that really took my breath away was Kay’s ability to render ideas of her own into intricate details with the significance still intact.Plus, for the first time in what seems like forever, Sarah Kay's words have inspired me to start writing again. It took a few poems for me to get into No Matter The Wreckage and get used to the distinctive style of the poems and the poet’s voice.
