About this deal

Instead it would need to be cast from a computer or mobile device (BenQ is in discussions with Netflix for compatibility, so we might see it added down the line).

All these modes did a good job of showing the subtle gradations that make close-ups of rounded objects, such as faces, look three-dimensional. For my formal tests in a dark room, Cinema mode was bright enough to fill a 90-inch-diagonal white screen. com from its start, and for PC Magazine before that, as a Contributor, then a Contributing Editor, then as the Lead Analyst for Printers, Scanners, and Projectors, and now, after a short hiatus, back to Contributing Editor. But if your primary use is playing games, and you want to fill a massive wall doing it, the TH685 is an excellent tool for the job. And having other cookies switched off can seriously affect the way you’ll be able to enjoy our services.

As Brilliant Color is lowered, and therefore the white brightness comes down, the color brightness percentage improves.

The TH685i does a good job downconverting the 4K version, showing off the detail of the floating ship displays and skin texture of the actors well. The TH685 does what it sets out to do pretty well, serving up an enjoyable gaming performance that’s particularly at home in rooms with a little ambient light in them. The title sequence of Alien on 4K Blu-ray reveals this problem clearly enough for me to instantly notice it – and I'd generally only consider myself around average in terms of my susceptibility to rainbowing issues. In our standard comparison of the same movies on both 1080p SDR and 4K HDR discs, the HDR versions delivered such an obvious step up in contrast and shadow detail that I didn't need a side-by-side comparison to be sure of it. Switch on your TH685 projector to carry yourself or your team to victory in various video game settings.Once you get the focus right, image detail is appropriate for the 1080p resolution, and colors for movies and video are well within the range for realistic color in all but one of the predefined color modes.

Red and green were both a little undersaturated, cyan was too blue, and the dark to midtone grays were a bit too bright (this affected the overall contrast of the picture). The TH685’s digital vertical lens shift fits perfectly into any room offering a dynamic range of projection heights. My impression is that they offered the same shadow detail as in SDR, but with darker gray levels to yield a more dramatic image and greater sense of dimensionality. Which is really handy given the relatively casual usage situations the TH685 is likely to find itself in.

The game is a fantastic homage to the X-wing games of the '90s while still being its own experience. For those who aren't bothered by rainbow artifacts, the BenQ TH685P offers a combination of low input lag and excellent image quality for both SDR and HDR, and even excellent built-in audio. It put out the same 2,705 ANSI lumens in our measurements after multiple readings, or 77% of the published spec, which BenQ says falls below any expected tolerance and might suggest an issue with our sample or lamp. For those that can overlook the future and can instead revel in the here and now, the BenQ TH685 is an affordable projector that’s perfect for a basement gaming setup. Alternatively, choose a bare bulb without housing if you already have experience with replacing bare bulbs and are willing to deal with the more challenging replacement process.

Editorial independence means being able to give an unbiased verdict about a product or company, with the avoidance of conflicts of interest. In my tests, even the lower-brightness Cinema mode delivered a bright, 90-inch image with nicely saturated color in a dark room. Last-gen gamers will love the BenQ TH685’s exceptional response time, but they’ll be doubly impressed if they’re playing in a pitch-black room where contrast becomes less of an issue. Projectors in general are notorious for having lag that can top 100ms, which would cause a game's response to feel sluggish or that your reflexes are slow. The TH685 does come with one budget string attached, however: it's only a Full HD projector rather than one supporting the 4K graphics now commonplace on the latest gaming devices, not to mention Netflix, Prime Video, iPlayer and your UHD Blu-ray collection. It is a cheaper solution recommended for in-home use, where projection quality and reliability are not as crucial. Other minor changes from the TH685 to the TH685i include the removing of the monitor-out D-sub connector—a PC VGA D-sub input is still there—and the moving of the 3.
