About this deal

Her characters are well-developed, and it’s excellent to be able to follow them as they deal with each new case and the challenges it brings. Highly recommended and in common with the second outing, In The Dark, this is a twisty and absorbing police procedural that pulls no punches. I feel like the way it’s formatted keeps the pace from ever lagging and it also makes it so hard to put the book down. Throughout the series, I couldn't really see the value he brought to the team other than creating drama.

The story is told from the investigation and the events that took place 317 days before the fire in the victims' house. But as well as Fawley having to deal with another case involving young children, which is always a reminder of the loss of his own young son, we are also privy to the fact that he has recently separated from his wife which is something not many on his team know. The flashbacks serve to confirm the police resolution, leave no loose endings and provide a satisfying conclusion to an effective team effort. His wife's contrasts are softer: beige-brown hair, pinkish cheeks, light-coloured eyes, probably hazel. The case we start out with is more or less unrecognisable by the time we reach the end, but there’s a logical progression – and, thankfully, a logical solution – that leaves us feeling satisfied and entertained. I found it a more effective impact to create the impression that major and essential information was driven from a news source or police report. The book is very readable: I finished it in a couple of days despite the fact that I really should have been getting ready to go on holiday.

Not only is the reader made privy to every one of the multiple lines of inquiry, the thinking of the team and their suspicions, there is the opportunity to see all aspects of one major incident being investigated from start through to ultimate closure. DI Frawley has got acting DS Gislinghame as SIO on the case after Quinn has been demoted following the events of the previous book.

Southey Road in North Oxford is the home of the academic Michael Esmond, wife Samantha and their children, 10 year old Mattie and 3 year old Zachary. This immersive look at what actually goes on behind the scenes creates immediacy with the inner working of the investigating team allowing the reader themselves to feel central to the effort. The narrative flits between past and present, allowing us to gain great insight into this family unit, and ultimately how and why this tragedy came about.

DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Penguin Books UK via NetGalley for providing a digital ARC of No Way Out by Cara Hunter for review. With three books in little over a year, Cara Hunter could be in danger of her readership burning out with Fawley fatigue. Fawley’s narrative is presented in the first-person and those of his team in the third-person, making it clear who is leading the inquiry and the chain of command with Chris Gislingham overseeing his first major case as a detective sergeant.
