About this deal

You’re repainting a previously painted surface in the same color or going from a lighter to a darker paint color. The right primer for your project depends on the environment you’ll be working in, the surface you’ll be painting, and your preferences for the time frame of the job and its final look. Read on to find out what makes a quality paint primer and why the below options rank as our top favorites among the best paint primers we tested. We typically start by cutting in up in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. Since we are going to be applying the primer on the ceiling too, we don’t necessarily need to get a nice straight line up there. We just need to get the primer into the corner where the paint roller may not reach. Coverage: 300-400 sq. ft. (27.87-37 m²) per gallon depending on application method and surface porosity. Before you proceed with applying a primer, cover the doors or other objects with drop cloths and painter’s tape to protect them from splatters. Then, apply a thin coat of primer with a roller. A foam sponge roller cover will help you get a nice and smooth finish without an orange-peel effect.

Primer usually comes in white or gray. Use either color as is without tinting it or have the primer tinted to a hue that’s slightly lighter than the top coat. Tinting primer, which requires buying a primer labeled “tintable,” generally achieves a deeper, richer, and more uniform final color but is particularly recommended in the following situations:

In our opinion, the best paintbrush for cutting in is the Wooster short cut with a tapered edge (meaning that there is a dome shape to the edge of the bristles when you look at the brush edge-wise – which is called the filament). We typically use either theWooster Ultra/Pro Firm Shortcut Angle Sash 2″ brushor theWooster 2″ Shortcut Angle Sash brush with Chinex bristles. Both of those have that tapered filament that makes it perfect for getting a nice clean line. If washing is necessary, use a non-soapy detergent or a TSP substitute, rinse well and allow to dry. Only apply if surface, air and product temperatures are between 50°-90°F (10°-32°C). Stir thoroughly before and occasionally during use. Apply using a brush, roller or sprayer. You’re changing the color from darker to lighter. The tinted primer reduces the number of paint coats needed to hide the darker base coat. This primer’s exceptional adhesion extends beyond just wood paneling. It’s a reliable option for priming not only wood surfaces but also metals, plastics, and even masonry! This adaptability can save you time and effort, especially when dealing with different materials in a single project.

Start by rolling the primer over the bathroom ceiling. It is best to start in one corner of the room and bring the paint roller up to the ceiling. Apply the paint to the ceiling in small sections. Slightly overlap the paint strokes as you roll it on.The primer is low odor, low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and provides excellent coverage on interior and exterior surfaces. It’s made from water-based acrylic and is designed to resist blistering, peeling, and mold and mildew growth. The primer is tintable and available in white or gray. It’s also available in spray-paint form. Has an EPA registered active ingredient that creates a mold and mildew-resistant film that protects the primer film from mold and mildew growth Consider a Rust-Oleum Marine Coatings primer if you need to give wood panels or fiberglass elements in your interior a new shine. It will enhance the gloss and look of top coats to ensure your repainting project brings the desired results. Before you start, always make sure that your substrate is clean with no dust or dirt on the surface. Drywall: Apply a latex primer to drywall, as an oil-based primer can raise the grain and make the surface look uneven.

When you select a primer for painting paneling, it is a good idea to spend extra time studying what color will do better for your project. For example, you need to buy a white finish primer if you want to get a solid base for light shades. A clear primer is a good choice when you want to see the wood through your painting. A gray primer will work great for darker paints. Also, you will find other color options, but make sure you get the shade that is close to your new paint. What type of primer for paneling to choose? Unpainted, exterior wood exposed to sun and/or moisture longer than 2-4 weeks must be cleaned and sanded before priming.

Common Paint Questions

We recommend that almost all wall and floor surfaces are primed, before they are tiled. You may need to apply primer neat or diluted with water, depending on how porous your substrate is. Paint with primer is best for previously painted walls. Primers are recommended for use on any surface that has not been previously painted. Q. Do I have to use paint primer? There are many kinds of undercoat paints available for different painting surfaces, so when looking for undercoat paint, you must consider the painting surface. We have explained the different undercoating types below to help you understand which one works better for a given surface. Rubber Based Undercoating
