As you would expect from a novel this short (look at the number of pages then add in the fact that there are sketches as well and you can truly begin to understand just how short the story really is) events progress at quite a speed, keeping you interested from start to end. I was quite sure that I had read all his novels, but then realised there was this 120 page short story that I had somehow missed (it's a standalone novel itself published first in 1975). Obviously written for the purpose of spreading the holiday cheer and setting the cash registers ringing.Either the de Havilland Vampire pilot is now an American, or we're going to watch the horror of seeing "Vinnie Barbarino" attempt a British accent. Forsyth created this original work as a Christmas gift to his first wife Carrie after she requested a ghost story be written for her. From July to September 1967, he served as a correspondent covering the Nigerian Civil War between the region of Biafra and Nigeria. The stars were no longer impressive in their brilliance; I thought of their hostility, sparking away there in the timeless, lost infinities of endless space. As something you can read in one very quick sitting, it is interesting but doesn’t really blow the mind.

All I will say is I think it's not necessarily a story that will do well in that medium, being a small intimate piece. On Christmas Eve 2016, BBC Radio 3 broadcast a new adaptation by Amber Barnfather for Between the Ears, performed by actor Luke Thompson. There was an RAF pilot killed over France but his aircraft was found a bit north of his base suspended in tree's, having run out of fuel.
