About this deal

Vote up content that is on-topic, within the rules/guidelines, and will likely stay relevant long-term. This features some nice, early versions of "What Difference Does It Make", "This Charming Man" and"Hand in Glove", as well as classic tracks like "These Things Take Time", "Reel Around the Fountain" and "Please Please Please, Let Me Get What I Want". Spurred on by a brace of positive reviews, Hatful Of Hollow more than fulfilled its brief to keep the spotlight on The Smiths during the period between the release of their self-titled debut album and 1985’s UK chart-topping Meat Is Murder. It was released on 12 November 1984 by the band's British record company, Rough Trade, just months after the band's debut, The Smiths.

This Night Has Opened My Eyes" was recorded in the studio in June 1984, but the only version ever released was the September Peel session. The song’s memorable backing track was built around a riff of Johnny Marr’s inspired by both Bo Diddley and Can’s I Want More, with Marr and producer John Porter adding a distinctive tremolo effect achieved by running the guitar track through three separate Fender Twin Reverb amplifiers. But most crucial to the Smiths’ success and acceptance among finicky student listeners was lead singer and lyricist Morrissey. As if this wasn't enough, Hatful… contains the first appearance of what may be the band's finest moment. Equally luckily someone at Rough Trade noticed, and a deal was struck to release these sessions along with some non-album A and B sides as Hatful Of Hollow. The Queen is Dead is oft regarded as the pinnacle of the Smiths music, and as one the cornerstones of music history.

Morrissey and Johnny Marr lamented the lack of chart success of what they considered their strongest song thus far. They comprised the singer Morrissey, the guitarist Johnny Marr, the bassist Andy Rourke and the drummer Mike Joyce. But Stevie’s writing talents and vocal… contributions (talent might not be the right word in this case) alone would not make this record a success. Some listeners interpreted “These Things Take Time” as an innocent retelling of a friendly drunken afternoon – others interpreted as a ghastly abomination detailing unrequited homosexual love.

reissue of HoH but after reading about it's subpar pressing quality I decided to bite the bullet and get an original- and my god was it worth it! Hatful of Hollow is a compilation album by English rock band the Smiths, released on 12 November 1984 [11] by Rough Trade Records. If we had a John Peel type on the US government's payroll, I'd be willing to live with a despot or two. Their eponymous debut had some fine songs, but the production had left them sounding rather tinny and un-finished. i love the raw edge to the performances, and although it's morrissey who more obviously demands your attention here, marr really is peerless on this record, from the exquisite acoustic washes of 'please, please let me get what i want' and 'william it's really nothing', to the fluid guitar lines of 'this charming man' and 'heaven knows. Hatful Of Hollow was the point where even to doubters began to really believe the hype surrounding the band.
